FCE - Paper 3 - Use of English

I thought of creating an introductory Prezi on Use of English part of FCE exam after a colleague of mine, Ana Rivas, asked me whether I had any material for it or not.

I think that this presentation can be used to introduce a group of students to this part of exam and let them practise a little.

The teacher will surely be explaining the skills required for this part and students can write down some tips. Alternatively, the Prezi can shared online if the learners have an online group page.

Anyway, this is what I've got and you are welcome to share it with your learners.

  1. Dear Anna,
You look professional at using Prezi. I like your presentation so much. I have a question ... where do students answer these questions and complete these tasks? Do you mean they are going to create their Prezi presentations to complete these tasks?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
    All the best,

  2. Hi Azhar!

    Thanks for your feedback. :)

My idea is to use this presentation as an introduction to FCE Paper 3 so that they have an idea what it is like. I am planning to put them into pairs and ask them to discuss their answers with partners and write them down in their exercise books, then they can compare their answers with the answers on the following slide.

I think it will be too much to ask them to create a Prezi. What do you think?

  3. Hi again Anna,

Thanks so much for responding to my questions. It is a good idea to ask them to work in pairs or groups, then compare their results. However, what I noticed in my classes is that students like to try new tools. What about asking them to create a simple Prezi presentation as an extended activity outside classroom? I'm sure that they will like doing that.

    Thanks for sharing!
    Best regards,

  4. Hi Azhar!

I am so glad that you are sharing your ideas with me. Thank you! :)

To be honest I would love to ask them to use the tool, the problem is that my FCE students are so reluctant to use any web tools that I have given up asking them to do anything online. In contrast my IELTS students are happy to use wikis and Voxopop for their tasks so I use these tools with them.

The Internet offers such opportunities, but unfortunately not every person is willing to try new things. This is a very big issue here in Armenia.

What about Egypt? Are all your students happy to do some online work?

    Kind regards,
    Anna

  5. Dear Anna,

In Egypt, students love the internet so much. All the time, I see them on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. When I ask them to try any tool, they welcome and do so wonderful job. The problem in Egypt is that most parents don't agree on using the internet. They think that it is a waste of time. Recently, there is some sort of awareness of using some tools inside classrooms, but this needs much time.

For your FCE students, what about using some attractive tools like Voki, Glogster and Blabberize? They are so simple and interesting. For me, this is the first time to know that some students in other parts of the world don't like the internet. I'm so astonished!!!!!

Wish you the best luck with your students!!!

  6. Hi Azhar,

I agree that parents in many cases disagree with their children's using the Internet.

My FCE students are adults and spend most of their day at work at the computer and don't want to see it again at home. :) That's why I can't get them use it.

I personally love all the tools, but with this particular group nothing works. :D

I also had a group of university students who were not very keen on doing anything online. The only thing they do is they read and reply to articles that I post for them to read on their Facebook group wall. And then again, they don't always read even those. Well, I try to introduce the tools slowly and gradually to them. We will see what happens. :)
